Venize Biennale 2017 “Transbordering Art” documentary excerpts
On May 13, the Venize Biennale 2017 special project “TRANS-BORDERING-ART: Everyone’s 5-Minute Solo Exhibition” opened simultaneously in Venice, Italy, and online. From May 13 to 18, nearly one hundred artworks from around the world were exhibited at the 57th Venice Biennale, with exhibition spaces spanning the “Giardini” and “Arsenale” venues. The exhibited works included paintings, photography, motion images, performance art, and other conceptual art forms. Over 90% of the works were collected through social media submissions over the course of one month, while about 10% were created on-site by the “Art-Transborderers” who traveled to Venice.
Unique Features
This exhibition is unprecedented in that it is the first art show where everyone can be selected and awarded! Any work submitted according to the process was “one-click selected” and immediately showcased at the world’s most prestigious art event. Whether you are a newcomer to art schools, an “underground” artist with years of experience, or a “professional artist” within the system and market, everyone is guaranteed at least 5 minutes of exhibition time.
Challenging Conventional Curatorial Logic
This project completely disrupts the “unspoken curatorial logic” prevalent in contemporary art circles both domestically and internationally. Today, from the Venice Biennale to small student group exhibitions, nearly all operate on a “curator-determined” basis. In other words, artists not within specific circles have no opportunity to display their work. Being a professional artist often means devoting more energy to social networking than to creation. While artists in the classical era were confined to the patronage of nobles, contemporary art has evolved for over a century since Duchamp, and today we can communicate with the world from our computer screens. Why, then, does “contemporary art” still follow classical art’s developmental patterns? Why do artists remain a manipulated, marginalized group? Why is the entire art circulation process so opaque? These are the questions our exhibition/action aims to raise. Perhaps we cannot answer them through art, but we can challenge the boundaries with art.

TRANS-BORDERING-ART:
Everyone’s 5 min Solo Exhibition
The first exhibition in History where everyone gets In! Submit now!
“L’écriture s’est usée, il faut la renouveler.” Ch. Dotremont, COBRA, 1968
Venize Biennale 2017 is a parallel art world trying to hear from the limbo what the underground is screaming.
It is an attempt to bring back poetry or at least, blow up certainties again, to blur the boundaries between “in” and “out”, “professional artist” and “artist”.
We encourage everyone to apply for this exhibition.
We want everyone’s scream to be worldwide.
We need to renew the thinking and the trend by questioning the hierarchical “art circle”, and the obscure “art evaluation”.
It is an exhibition about contestation of supremacy. Supremacy is surrounding us at different levels, that’s why we bring about this counter-power, jury-free exhibition.
The Trans-Bordering-Art expresses our desire to travel across frontiers of any kind in any field (geography, art, economy, identity, official or non official, etc). The Art-Trans-Borderers will smuggle some “outside” artworks to Venice Biennale and exhibit them “inside”.
Since ages, the Art World is breathing in plastic bags, now and then, a new movement occurs, punching a hole in the plastic bag so we can breath freely again. It doesn’t last long as Art World is about valuable things and safe investment, it cannot be about punk attitude of doing art freely. In order to reset the hierarchy, the free goods are recuperated by the main stream, entering in the sacrosanct labeled art, leading to a new aesthetic trend that everyone must follow if he wants to be “in”.
Impressionism, Surrealism, Avant-garde, Fluxus, Street art… History plays the same play all over again.
As a special program in this significant international biennale, “TRANS-BORDERING-ART:Everyone’s 5 min Solo Exhibition” is definitely adventurous comparing to the programs of major art festivals, for the main game rule is that everyone who submits will be selected and awarded!
It is a group exhibition parallel to the 57th International Art Exhibition of Venice Biennale. Besides being shown in Venice, the artworks will be also exhibited in “Venize Biennale Online Exhibition 2017” which covers the whole duration of the 57th International Art Exhibition (13th of May – 26th of November 2017).
